This year’s charity challenge will take place on the 12th of September, bringing together Totus Engineering, Kier Construction and the 820 Squadron from RNAS Culdrose. We were delighted to have the opportunity to send employees from our mechanical, electrical and design teams to Culdrose for the recent STEM Lego Challenge. Between 8th and 10th September 2022, Totus undertook their most gruelling challenge yet, with a team of runners and a team of walkers covering 80 miles over 3 days from Lands End to Padstow, along some of the most brutal coast path that Cornwall has to offer. An excellent effort from everyone involved with nearly £3,000 raised for West Cornwall Search and Rescue. Well done Team Totus! Totus Engineering are excited to announce that we are now certified by LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board) for the installation of fire resisting dampers. This certification outlines our commitment to providing our clients with peace of mind when installing life saving equipment. Quality and safety is always at the forefront of our project delivery. Being one of the first businesses in the South West to obtain this certification is extremely important, ensuring we are constantly striving to deliver the best service to our clients. On Wednesday 22nd September Totus are excited to be hosting a booth in the Southern Construction Framework virtual ‘Meet the Buyer Event’. The event is totally virtual, free to participate and has a packed conference schedule. We are looking to engage with new supply chain partners and manufacturers who would like to work with Totus on potential future projects. Please register your interest and arrange a time to chat with our team.
Today we have staff members attending the first of a course of Mental Health First Aid training sessions hosted by Be Mental Healthy We are training our Mental Health Champions to support our colleagues and their own wellbeing, giving them tools to help gain an in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing. Our staff will gain practical skills to identify someone struggling with mental health issues, confidence to step in; reassure and support a person in distress, enhanced interpersonal skills and the knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support. Did you know 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health issue each year? Mental Health matters!
Staff within our Bodmin Office have recently done a collection and handed over 2 super hampers to St Petroc’s church in Bodmin. Totus are currently assisting the church with their renewable heating objective as they look for a green solution to demonstrate their commitment to the environment and the future of all. Gavin Derbyshire, our in-house renewables expert, is working closely with the church to look at how they can move from an old oil burning boiler to using clean electric produced by solar photovoltaic panels on the roof of the church with a clean electric energy provider. Great to be featured in the July edition of the national Construction & Civil Engineering magazine as we approach our 10 year anniversary. Huge kudos goes to our extraordinary team who have been amazing through what has been an eventful and exciting journey. Looking forward to the next 10 years. 2025 Wheels and Heels Challenge
The 2025 ‘Wheels & Heels’ challenge will involve members of our teams taking on a gruelling 30-mile coast path run, 20-mile coast path hike, and 100-mile cycle before crossing the finish line at RNAS Culdrose.
3 teams, same goal – which team will be the first to cross the line?
Setting off from RNAS Culdrose the ‘Wheels’ will complete a 100-mile cycle taking them through Penryn, Redruth, Hayle, St Ives, St Just and Penzance before circling the Lizard peninsula back to Helston, completing 11,000ft of climb.
The ‘Heels’ will consist of a running team and a walking team. The runners will join the South West coast path at the Minack Theatre, Porthcurno covering a 30 mile route. The walkers will start from Penzance covering a 20-mile route. Both teams will pass through Mousehole, Penzance, Marazion, Praa Sands and Porthleven, completing up to 4,500ft of elevation on the route back to Culdrose.
All donations will be split between two wonderful causes.
SSAFA the Armed Forces charity provides direct support to individuals in need of physical or emotional care. Many of the problems that individuals encounter including addiction, relationship breakdown, debt, homelessness, post-traumatic stress, depression and disability often only become apparent when an individual has to leave their life in the Forces and join ‘Civvy Street’. SSAFA is committed to helping these brave men and women overcome problems, and rebuild their lives.
Boskenwyn Community Primary School located near Culdrose will be supported through fundraising to provide a new outdoor play area after the last one was condemned and removed from the school.

STEM Lego Challenge 2025
Sam Cooper, Darren Toy and Kat Hardman used their technical knowledge and skill to judge some incredible creations over the two-day event alongside Kier Construction.
Tasked with building Lego robots and presenting original ideas to demonstrate solutions to overcoming real-world problems, more than 600 students showed their ingenuity.
Sam Cooper commented, “It was brilliant to see so many young people creating such incredible engineering projects, with enthusiasm, innovation, teamwork and problem-solving skills all being displayed. It is truly inspiring to have the opportunity to see so many boys and girls from Cornwall have such passion for STEM. We may have even found a few future employees over the last couple of days!”
